What Actually Are Plyometrics And Plyometric Training?
By Kevin Doberstein CFT, Thu Dec 8th

Article intro: I was first introduced to Plyometrics forcompetitive karate tournaments. More specifically, sparring orpoint fighting. I used plyometric-training theories to help mecome off the line faster and beat my opponent to the first pointscored. Sometimes a simple backfist punch was the only thingneeded to win the match. I also used Plyometric training toincrease my kicking speed. In this brief article, I will bediscussing some highlights of Plyometrics.

I was first introduced to Plyometrics for competitive karatetournaments. More specifically, sparring or point fighting. Iused plyometric-training theories to help me come off the linefaster and beat my opponent to the first point scored. Sometimesa simple backfist punch was the only thing needed to win thematch. I also used Plyometric training to increase my kickingspeed. In this brief article, I will be discussing somehighlights of Plyometrics.

Plyometrics by definition is; a type of exercise using explosivemovements to develop muscular power, esp. bounding, hopping, andjumping. This somewhat narrow interpretation doesn’t go intodetail what this training method can do to help you with yourchosen field of sport. It is without nutrition particulars thatcoincide with plyometric training. Also, it fails to specifywhich energy system is used by the body for this type ofconditioning.

The term “Plyometrics” was created in the mid-seventies by trackcoaches looking for an edge. Plyometric training stimulates thefast twitch muscle fiber. The fast twitch or white fiber isresponsible for explosive type of muscular movements. The mainobjective in Plyometric training is to improve fastness throughstrength. This is accomplished by applying exerted energy withvelocity. This process includes making the amortization portionof the strength curve as short as possible to increase power inthe concentric motion. The strength curve is comprised of 3components. The eccentric, amortization and the concentric. Tobetter explain let’s take the bench press for example. At thebeginning of the bench-press you are holding the barbelloverhead. As you lower it to your chest the eccentric (ornegative) portion is being preformed. When you stop at thebottom, or on your chest, the amortization period takes place. When the barbell is lifted off your chest, the concentricmovement is preformed.

Plyometrics is an anaerobic type of exercise, which means thatit is non-oxygen fueled. It uses adenosine triphosphate andcreatine phosphate (ATP/CP) for its energy source, which isstored in the muscle tissue. When this ATP/CP is depleted, themuscles draw glucose, which is stored in the liver. This glucoseconverts back into ATP/CP in the muscle. Because of theanaerobic nature of Plyometrics, you should include pre-workoutand post-workout nutrition. Both should include complex andsimple carbohydrates. Also a high-grade protein is needed forfueling and replenishing.
